Notes on Making an Effective Password

Passwords are very essential in keeping the privacy and confidentiality of your resources and your identity. In this information age where everyone can gain access to almost all sorts fo information, security is something never to be neglected but is always overlooked. The topic on passwords and keeping them secure must be something that is already known by many but is never practiced by most. So, I am writing just to reiterate and make others aware again of the need for effective password and how to gain one. I hope it helps.

Keep in mind that a weak password can lead to serious troubles just like the following:

  • It can allow a virus to gain access to your computer and spread through the network to which you are connected.
  • It can allow hackers to gain access to your computer as well as other private information in your network through your account.
  • Once a hacker gained control of your account, he can use it to send malicious messages to other people. You will be held legally responsible for any damages done by someone else using your account.
  • The confidentiality of your files and records will be compromised.

My Full Initiation at 8layer: KS, Hu u? Y u?, and Training Update

Last Friday, August 5, 2011, I had my very first Knowledge Sharing (KS) at 8Layer Technologies as an OJT. I was “IT” together with Sir Renan, Sir Henyo, and Ms. Jona (who had her KS impromptu as well).  At first, I could not believe that I was really going to be one of the sharers for the KS not until Sir Meric told me the day before (I was hoping there would be something like sample first… laughs). I was not prepared at all. I did try to put up a simple presentation at home but what lucky timing and the electricity got cut off while I was working on it (O_o). So I came bare with just myself and the things I know of my course, Information Systems.

I came to the office very late from school with just an ample amount of time to prepare myself for the events to come (phew!).  Then, all has been set and it was my time to shine. We started off with Hu u? Y u?, the 8lien version of introduce yourself. Surprisingly, I was not as nervous as I thought I would be; for, I am real bad with having to speak in front of people. After that, they asked me about my training milestones with the company (sadly, I have just a few more hours left for the internship experience). From there, things went smoothly and more fun for me. Sir Renan showed us an inventory system using GLPI which supports OCS agent. It is a really handy tool, I tell you, because it can capture your device info straight to the inventory with just a simple import command using the console. After that, I shared to them what Information Systems (my course) is. Hopefully, they did get the gist of it. After that, Sir Henyo, showed us a simple bash script that enables installing, uninstalling, and updating packages in Kahel OS. It would be really useful for those who tends to forget the commands for these actions. Lastly, Ms. Jona, showed us the CRM that the company uses for task management. It had features that Ms. Jona herself said are really useful like  notifications (which can come handy if you will religiously input your tasks in the system), quick search options, attachment of documents, monitoring prospect proposals, and others.

We also ended up talking about other stuff in getting to familiarize ourselves with what have been shared. We ended up taking a look at the OTRS support system as well. Even though I was not able to relate with them at many points of their discussion, it was fun seeing them taking real interest in what is being shared. They also took interest with my simple sharing of what my course is. It was a really nice experience. We wrapped up things at around 7pm.

I am looking forward for the next KS and I am hoping that I would be able to share something more. 🙂

Upcoming Celebration of Linux Day

The time is fast approaching; a few more days and it’s Linux Day. We at 8Layer Technologies are going to take part in celebrating this global event of Linux’s 20th anniversary.  I’m already feeling so excited and I’m looking forward to meeting the other OJTs of 8layer as well. Even better is that we can share in this event with our other friends as well. Bet it’s going to be lots of fun. So mark your calendars on August 27, 2011, 1-5pm because we’re gonna be celebrating 8lien style right here at 8Layer’s office in Pasig City.

My First Out of the Office Experience

Yesterday, I and Sir Renan went to PLDT’s innovation center, the PLDT Innolab in Boni Avenue. We went there for the update of the Innolab website’s server.

It is observable that the place enforces a strict security policy. Before the visitors can enter the company premises, they have to leave their IDs and log their names into sheets of paper that is varied depending on the purpose of visit . They have to get visitor passes as well. Even hardwares and laptops must be logged before they can be allowed inside. Finally, there is also a quick inspection from the guards.

Now let me tell you what it was like when we entered the server/testing room. There were a lot of entangled wires and big IT infrastructures as well as busy people. There were several servers in the room serving different purposes. There were servers used for the office resources, some for the web, some for testing, and others. The room was spacious enough with servers placed together in a single area  a bit parted from the working area of the employees.

It was my first time inside a server room. Continue reading
