My Full Initiation at 8layer: KS, Hu u? Y u?, and Training Update

Last Friday, August 5, 2011, I had my very first Knowledge Sharing (KS) at 8Layer Technologies as an OJT. I was “IT” together with Sir Renan, Sir Henyo, and Ms. Jona (who had her KS impromptu as well).  At first, I could not believe that I was really going to be one of the sharers for the KS not until Sir Meric told me the day before (I was hoping there would be something like sample first… laughs). I was not prepared at all. I did try to put up a simple presentation at home but what lucky timing and the electricity got cut off while I was working on it (O_o). So I came bare with just myself and the things I know of my course, Information Systems.

I came to the office very late from school with just an ample amount of time to prepare myself for the events to come (phew!).  Then, all has been set and it was my time to shine. We started off with Hu u? Y u?, the 8lien version of introduce yourself. Surprisingly, I was not as nervous as I thought I would be; for, I am real bad with having to speak in front of people. After that, they asked me about my training milestones with the company (sadly, I have just a few more hours left for the internship experience). From there, things went smoothly and more fun for me. Sir Renan showed us an inventory system using GLPI which supports OCS agent. It is a really handy tool, I tell you, because it can capture your device info straight to the inventory with just a simple import command using the console. After that, I shared to them what Information Systems (my course) is. Hopefully, they did get the gist of it. After that, Sir Henyo, showed us a simple bash script that enables installing, uninstalling, and updating packages in Kahel OS. It would be really useful for those who tends to forget the commands for these actions. Lastly, Ms. Jona, showed us the CRM that the company uses for task management. It had features that Ms. Jona herself said are really useful like  notifications (which can come handy if you will religiously input your tasks in the system), quick search options, attachment of documents, monitoring prospect proposals, and others.

We also ended up talking about other stuff in getting to familiarize ourselves with what have been shared. We ended up taking a look at the OTRS support system as well. Even though I was not able to relate with them at many points of their discussion, it was fun seeing them taking real interest in what is being shared. They also took interest with my simple sharing of what my course is. It was a really nice experience. We wrapped up things at around 7pm.

I am looking forward for the next KS and I am hoping that I would be able to share something more. 🙂

My First 8lienized Week

Oh my gosh! Time passed by so quickly and I have already spent a week here at 8Layer Technologies. So far I’m still in the process of adapting myself to the environment and the people here. I am actually introverted and thus, I don’t know yet how to open myself up to the people here. They have treated me well and it is really comfortable here. At first, I thought that the place was more “home-like” than corporate so I was quite doubtful but now I think that the people here are by far the coolest people that I have ever met. I think that they are very knowledgeable about what they are doing and they are more passionate than how they may seem (no offense intended haha!). First impressions never really last. And one more good thing about it is that they are really sociable people. 😉

Now to the part of what I have done in this week, well there is nothing much yet but this site and blog are one of the first tasks that I was given for this week. Thank goodness for that because I’m still anxious about the technical stuff. I haven’t really put to practice the programming and technical things that I’ve learned in school and I have yet to review them. (As you can see I have no formatting whatsoever in this post cause I don’t know how to.) XD Aside from that, I am about to learn proper Linux installation and other Linux stuff from Sir Renan so I am quite excited. I also received orientation from Sir Meric and was able to learn more about 8layer.

I am looking forward to the future activities that Sir Meric will be giving me and hopefully, I will be able to deliver according to what is expected of me. I hope that I would be able to contribute as much as I would learn and be a certified 8lien in practice as the days pass.

“EVEN YOU OJT STUDENTS CAN SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE DITO PARA LAHAT TAYO AY NATUTUTO” — SIR MERIC MARA

“Tell us what you have learned everytime na may natutunan kayong bago through Knowledge Sharing(KS) but this time, LET’S TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL. Hindi na simpleng ganito at ganyan, magreresearch ka para mas lumawak pa ang natutunan mo at ippresent mo siya dito APPLICATION TYPE. Then dun ka palang makakatungtong sa next level.” *smile of success

Yahh! It’s my first time here and I admit that I’m starting to love this ‘Open Source Company’. It felt so good that I gained knowledge even just by sitting still, listening and watching these guys in our KNOWLEDGE SHARING and weekly REPORTS. It’s my first task here at 8LayersTech and I admit it I’m totally nervous! I can do nothing. GAAHHDD! LOL. But fortunately, with great office ambiance and cool humorous 8liens here, (that’s what we, workers, are often called here) anything anywhere and anyhow you might tend to do for me, I KNOW I CAN! LOL (magpapatulong ako baket! mga pro kaya tao dito) :)

So expect that the next posts will be all about WEB DEVELOPMENT REPORTS particularly HTML, CSS and PHP since I was assigned to that section . Yeahbah baby boy! :)

New Found Circle

4 days had gone by too fast just like hours. And I asked myself…

What the heck has happened?!

So many new things, new people, new environment and new approach to things.

I’m an intern in 8Layer Tech and I’m working with 8Liens[people who work there]. It’s an open-source architect company.

I was assigned as a developer intern. So watch out, guys, for the things I’ve learned and will going to learn coz I’m gonna share it to’yah— without hesitation. :)

======

Anyways, to begin the knowledge sharing… what I’ve learned this summer are basic commands in terminal, how to install KahelOS, HTML: Nested tables, HTML: Background Image on your Tables/Cells using style tag.

So watch out for some learning. :)

======

I feel that I’ve been a part of community where I won’t gonna regret to work with. Cheers to learning!
